PFT Team
The physical fitness team, a year-long sport at MMA, is a member of the JROTC program, as is the rifle team and drill team. The physical fitness team normally participates in five competitions a year throughout the state, with the state championship in Austin, Texas. To qualify for the state championship, a school must finish first in one of the three events, drill team, rifle team and physical fitness team.
A physical fitness competition normally consists of a male and female division. Teams will consist of four members. The test will consist of three events: sit-ups, push-ups and a run. The run can be from a one to two miles depending on the location of the event. A point value is awarded for the number of repetitions completed during a set period of time, two minutes for sit-ups and push-ups. The time completed during a run has a value and the three scores are added together for the final individual and team's score.
Each year, depending on the success of the physical fitness team, a consideration is given to compete in the National Marine Corps Youth Physical Fitness Championship at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. To qualify for this competition, each team can consist of up to six members. Teams do not have to compete in regional or state competitions to qualify for the championship meet. However, it is recommended that male teams be prepared to score at least 1,875 points. The events for the national championship are: sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, standing broad jump, and 300-yard shuttle run. |
