MMA Tennis
Tennis is a year-round activity at MMA, beginning shortly after fall registration in August, and continuing through April. Tennis is available only as a varsity sport at the Academy. The strength of the team varies from year to year, and all interested players, regardless of their ability, are welcome to attend try-outs held at the beginning of the fall semester and again after mid-term registration in January.
Practices are held daily during the afternoon activity period. During this time, players work on stroke mechanics, perform drills and play practice matches. Conditioning is an essential part of the program, and practices usually end with some form of running, whether it be long-distance conditioning, agility drills or wind sprints. Days where weather makes outdoor practice impossible are spent in the weight room.
The tennis team plays six to eight high school tournaments during the year, primarily in South Texas. The team also schedules about the same number of practice matches against other public and private schools in the Rio Grande Valley. As a member of the TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools), MMA plays other member schools once a year at a state tournament, held usually in April.
